Scott Cowen
President, Tulane University
"Tulane University:From Recovery to Renewal"

Scott Cowen served for 23 years on the faculty of Case Western Reserve University, and for 14 years as Dean and Albert J. Weatherhead III Professor of Management at its Weatherhead School of Management. In 1998, Cowen became President of Tulane University in New Orleans. Since his arrival, the university has more than doubled its undergraduate applications, experienced all-time highs in student enrollment and quality, doubled the level of total private giving to the university, and received a record number of research awards. In June 2003, Cowen encouraged a national effort to reform intercollegiate athletics and ensure that sports programs are consistent with the values, missions and aspirations of their institutions.

Hurricane Katrina flooded half of Tulane's campus and dispersed its faculty and staff around the country, but under Cowen's leadership the campus was repaired and a remarkable 87 percent of its students returned for classes in January 2006. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin appointed Cowen to the city's Bring New Orleans Back Commission to reform and rebuild the city's failing public school system.

Outside of academia, Cowen is a member of the Board of Directors of Newell Rubbermaid Inc., American Greetings Corporation, Jo-Ann Stores Inc. and Forest City Enterprises Inc.
